For sure, the image of the bullet landing in the eye of the moon is a memorable sight and widely-recognized in cinematic history. "Le voyage dans la Lune" (1902), the screen's first science fiction story, was a 14 minute masterpiece. The film's plot, a light-hearted satire criticizing the conservative scientific community of its time, was inspired by Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon (1865) and H. G. Wells' First Men in the Moon (1901). This film was made on an astronomical budget for the time of 10,000 Francs - risky, but worthwhile since it was hugely

successful. Its popularity also led to it being illegally copied, released under others' names, and pirated (including one stolen by Edison's film technicians and distributed throughout the US). For example, an illegal duplicate of the film was available in the USA from Siegmund Lubin under the title A Trip to Mars.

Pobablemente la imágen mas conocida e icónica no solo del cine de Mélies, sino de toda la era silente del naciente cinema. "Le voyage dans la Lune" (1902), es la primera historia de ciencia ficción llevada a la pantalla, una obra maestra de 14 minutos de duración. La trama, una satira ligera, critica a la conservadora comunidad científica de su época. Fué inspirada por el libro "De la Tierra a la Luna" (1865) de Julio Verne y "El primer hombre en la Luna" (1901) de H.G. Wells. Su producción se hizo con un presupuesto astronómico para la época de 10,000 francos -arriesgado, pero valio el gasto ya que fué un enorme exito. Su polularidad tambien condujo a que fuera copiada ilegalmente, estrenada bajo otros nombres y hasta pirateada (incluso una copia fué robada por uno de los técnicos de Edison y distribuida por todo Estados Unidos). Por ejemplo, un duplicado ilegal era vendido por Siegmund Lubin bajo el titulo de "Un viaje a Marte".

Published by a French TV Station to celebrate Méliès 100th birth Aniversary. The first Cards were published some 40 years ago.

In France they are very sought after as these are mainly out of print now.

Illustrations come from Brithish Film Institute Stills, Posters and Designs, the Cinémathèque Française and the private collectios of Madame Madeleine Malthêthe-Méliès, Maurice Bessy, G. M. Lo Duca, Paul Hammond, Laurent Mannoni, Profesor Edwin Dawes and the author.

Edición francesa publicada por primera vez en 1961 con motivo del 1er centenario del nacimiento de Méliès. Sadoul hace uno de los mejores estudios del pionero de los efectos especiales en el cine. Este libro es el No. 1 de la colección "Cinéma d'aujourd'hui" de Editions Seghers.

Georges Méliès produced on film some of the most memorable images of the early cinema era. He died in 1938, twenty-five years after retiring from his film career, and never received the recognition which he deserved at the time, partly due to the innumerable imitators who flooded the market in his wake. The stamp collection launched in France to mark Méliès centenary was a step towards reclaiming his cherished place in film history.

Georges Méliès dejó plasmadas en película algunas de las más memorables imágenes de la era del naciente cine. Murió en 1938, veinticinco años despues de retirarse de su carrera, y nunca recibió el reconocimiento que se merecia en su época, en parte debido a los innumerables imitadores que inundaron el mercado. Esta estampilla fué lanzada en Francia para marcar el primer centenario de su nacimiento y fué un paso adelante hacia el reclamo de su importante y querido lugar en la historia del cine.

The card is in fine handmade writting and describe different position of the filmmaker's life, from Robert-Houdin Theatre manager, to President of the Film Editors International Congress (1909)
